Brewing Success With Frank Elias
The Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce ‘Business Person of the Year’ award is given annually to an individual who has shown exemplary service to the Chamber and/or community, putting focus on individuals who are dedicated to improving and impacting the business climate of the Greater Utica Area.
Frank Elias is the visionary founder of Utica Coffee Roasting Company, a brand that has become synonymous with quality coffee, community engagement, and the revitalization of Utica, New York. In 2005, Elias saw beyond just coffee—he saw an opportunity to energize a city, create opportunities for young people, and establish a brand that represents Utica’s resilience, culture and grit.
Under his leadership, Utica Coffee has grown from a small roasting operation into a well-known brand with multiple locations, a thriving wholesale business, and an ever-expanding online presence. Known for its bold flavors and even bolder branding—like the fan-favorite Wake The Hell Up! coffee—Elias has positioned Utica Coffee as a company that embraces creativity and a no-nonsense attitude. His core values center around quality products, sustainable business models, and community connections. He has made it his passion to source high-quality beans, roast them in-house, and create an environment that celebrates local culture.
Through partnerships with businesses, artists, and non-profits, he has embedded Utica Coffee deeply within the fabric of the region, helping to fuel local economic growth. Before venturing into coffee, Elias worked in local manufacturing/distribution and contributed to academia at both Herkimer College and Mohawk Valley Community College, where he developed training programs for businesses. His tenure as President of the Chamber of Commerce further underscores his dedication to community development.
Elias believes in taking risks, thinking differently, and staying true to his vision. His ability to blend entrepreneurial savvy with a passion for his hometown has transformed Utica Coffee Roasting into more than just a coffee company—it’s a movement that reflects the energy and revitalization of Utica itself.
“Frank Elias is the embodiment of what it means to lead with purpose, passion, and pride in our community. His vision for Utica Coffee Roasting Company went far beyond coffee—it became a blueprint for revitalization, entrepreneurship, and local pride. Frank didn’t just build a business; he built a movement that reflects the resilience, creativity, and grit of Utica itself. We are proud to honor him as our Business Person of the Year, and we thank him for his continued investment in our people, our economy, and our future.”
