"When you want to buy your mom an island but all you can afford is a tropical scented candle". I've seen this on Facebook over a dozen times and each time it rings true. Clearly I'm not alone in this feeling. This year, steering clear of the easy fall backs of flowers, chocolates and candles; I've come up with a list of presents that are sure to please your mom without breaking the bank.
1. Gift Baskets
At running the risk of sounding like Michael Scott, sometimes the old ways simply are better. There's nothing quite like receiving a gift basket, diving into it and seeing also the little goodies it contains. Coffee & tea gift baskets give her a variety of things she can use every day, and every time she does; I'm sure she will think of you.
If your mom is anything like mine, she is always on the go (and sometimes kind of a mess, I love you mom but you need a spill proof lid). Give her something she can use daily to keep her hot drinks hot and her cool drinks icy in the summertime.
Mom's love wine, cute animals, and spending time with their children. Why not extend the Mother's Day fun and make plans together by buying tickets for the Utica Zoo Wine In The Wilderness Event in June? Not only will it give you both something to look forward too; you get to sample local wines and make memories with your mom.
4. Breakfast In Bed
This one is an oldie but a goodie, nothing quite like waking your mom up with a fresh made breakfast of all her favorite foods. Serve her up her favorite coffee, give her a little card and start her day by showing how much you appreciated the many meals she's made for you over the years.
5. Time Spent With Her Kids
Get your mom out of the house! Give her a reason to get dolled up and bring her out on the town to one of the many nice local restaurants in the area. Both The Tailor & The Cook as well as Ocean Blue are guaranteed to make your mom feel like a queen. Bring her out to breakfast at one of your favorite coffee shops or take her for a drink at on Varick. Make some more memories.
6. Peace & Quiet
If the momma in your life has small children, sometimes the best gift you can give is gift of silence. Let her take a hot bath, relax and focus on herself. This has the potential to be the least expensive and most fulfilling on thing on this list.
